The industry does not speak of the obvious:  New Growth Wood is less dense, has less tanic acids and rots away very quickly if left to the elements or in times of leakage.  This includes modern framing lumber, sidings, trim, etc.

15 yr Cedar roofing
12 year old siding
sustainable for who?

All kinds of explanations are out there regarding roofing.  One is that the installation of cedar roofing directly over solid decking in the 1980's caused early failures.  Industry specifiers are still advocating such practice even with the obvious failures.

Cedar Sidings have failed miserably in recent years. Explanations range from improper priming to installation over rigid foam.  These are valid points however the products fail just as quickly when all was done right in the installation process.

The idea is for a sustainable resource, replenishable, etc.  The obvious cover-up smacks of an effort to sustain the profit margins of the industry.
